Cracks on the walls and how to deal with them

Sometimes cracks appear on the walls that spoil the appearance of the coating. How to get rid of them on your own, we will tell you below.

Cracks can appear for a number of reasons:

  • non-elastic low-quality paint was used when painting the walls, which did not provide a tight adhesion to the surface;
  • the paint was applied too thinly, or conversely, in a thick layer;
  • the surface was improperly prepared. (It is very important to apply a primer to the surface before painting);
  • deformations of the painted surface;
  • damage to the building’s structure.

When faced with the appearance of cracks, the question immediately arises: how to fix them?

Cracks that have arisen due to the aforementioned reasons can be fixed on your own, while cracks that may occur as a result of damage to the building’s structure require specialist intervention.

How to fix cracks on your own?

First of all, it is necessary to assess the condition of the surface. To fix a crack you need to:

  1. Widen it. To do this, remove cracked old paint or plaster, as well as other crumbling, peeling, and powdery particles.
  2. Then the surface must be primed. For these purposes, it is best to use deep penetration primer “TRIORA”. It penetrates the surface and binds separate crumbling particles, creating a strong coating. Moreover, due to deep penetration, the primer creates an elastic layer that evens out water absorption.
  3. Then apply putty combined with reinforcing mesh. If the entire wall is covered with cracks, fiberglass can be used. For filling small cracks, “TRIORA” finish putty can be used. If there are many cracks, then facade putty “TRIORA”, which allows applying a layer up to 5 mm thick, should be used. The plaster composition includes micronized marble, which makes the surface more durable.
  4. After applying the plaster, it must be allowed to dry. Then the surface should be sanded with fine or medium-grain sandpaper.
  5. The dust from sanding can be removed with water.

Thus, small cracks in the coating can be fixed on your own, provided you use quality materials so that you do not have to repeat the procedure later.
