Scandinavian interior: 5 mistakes in design

Soft colors, pleasant textures, a calming atmosphere—all the charms of Scandinavian style are present in the interior. Everything seems perfect, but for some reason, there is a sense of discomfort. What is the reason? One of the elements does not “fit” into the style picture. How do you find an inconspicuous flaw in an environment that seems flawless at first glance, and what mistakes are often made in the beloved Scandinavian style? Let’s look at this in our article.

The Most Common Mistakes

серый цвет в скандинавском стилеMistake No. 1. The Wrong Background

Scandinavian style means white color on a large scale. Many people think that white is impractical, uncomfortable, and prefer beige or gray instead. Here lies the first mismatch. Gray is a hallmark of the loft style, while beige is classic and timeless. Yes, all other colors from the Scandinavian palette combine well with them, but the main highlight of the style is lost. Tip: to make white look cozy at home, use a matte finish. For example, TRIORA deep-matte paint. It creates a velvety coating on the walls, is pleasant to the touch, beautiful, and easy to clean. The ideal option for northern style.

Scandinavian interiors imply empty windows in wooden frames. Its feature is lots of light and no textiles on the window. Unfortunately, urban building density does not allow this, so we usually hang curtains on our windows out of habit. This is the mistake. If you can’t leave the window open, use textile blinds or simple curtains made of dense fabric. The curtain rod should be wooden—not ceiling-mounted, but wall-mounted and simple in design. They will blend most organically into the overall style.

Scandinavian style in interiors is characterized by an abundance of natural materials. Modern linoleum does not fit here—nor does laminate flooring. The best floor covering is planks. Expensive parquet is not necessary; using simple veneer in a straightforward layout will help you realize the style to the fullest extent at home. And for durability, apply ZEBRA parquet varnish over your floors.

Lighting is another key feature of this interior style. The most appropriate fixture for this style is white on a copper base. You can use traditional lampshades and supplement them with wall or floor lamps. The main thing is to avoid modern techno-lamps and sparkling crystal.

Mistake No. 5. A Guest from Another Style

In striving for beauty, we often get carried away and deviate from interior design canons. It’s easy to make a mistake with Scandinavian style—even a small decorative item from another style can create dissonance. Use only very simple things in decor—no gold or curls; they should be very laconic.

It’s easier to avoid mistakes in the interior than to correct them later! So if your goal is to turn your home into a cozy dwelling inspired by northern countries, avoid these common missteps.
